The old town of Steyr occupies the point where the Steyr and Enns rivers meet, a setting that made it a wealthy iron-trading centre in the Middle Ages. Its magnificent town square is lined with Gothic and Baroque burgher houses in soft pastel colours, dominated by the ornate Bummerlhaus with its steep late-Gothic gable. Steep lanes and stairways connect the riverside quarters, and a hilltop castle overlooks the confluence. The town's prosperity from the iron trade left an unusually rich architectural legacy explored on foot.
