Cannaregio is one of the six historic sestieri of Venice, stretching along the northern edge of the city toward the mainland causeway. Quieter and more residential than the tourist core, it contains the world's first Jewish Ghetto, established in 1516, whose tall buildings rose high to house a confined community. Long straight canals such as the Fondamenta della Misericordia are lined with local bars, and the ornate Ca' d'Oro faces the Grand Canal here. Visitors escape the crowds along shaded quaysides and neighbourhood churches.

Where next?

The world is wide open.
