Venice rose from a lagoon: founded in the 5th century across 118 small islands, it had grown into a major maritime power by the 10th. The entire city is an architectural masterpiece in which even modest buildings hold works by the greatest artists — Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese among them — and city and lagoon form one inseparable creation. UNESCO inscribed Venice and its Lagoon in 1987.
