The Baxter Theatre Centre in the Rondebosch area of Cape Town, attached to the University of Cape Town, opened in 1977 and became notable for staging challenging, anti-apartheid theatre during the era of racial segregation. Its distinctive orange-tiled building contains a main theatre, a concert hall and a studio, hosting drama, music, dance and comedy. It has premiered many important South African plays and continues to champion new work. Set near the mountainside campus, it remains one of the country's most respected theatres.
