This concert hall near the Arc de Triomphe opened in 1927 and was long the principal home of classical concerts in Paris before the Philharmonie was built. Designed with acoustics as a central concern, its Art Deco auditorium hosted many of the twentieth century's leading orchestras and soloists. Named after the piano-making Pleyel firm, it seats around 1,900 in a broad, fan-shaped hall. It has since shifted toward popular music, though its architecture keeps it significant in the city's musical life.
