The Chand Minar is a slender victory tower within the hill fortress of Daulatabad in Maharashtra, built in the fifteenth century under the Bahmani sultanate. Rising about 63 metres in tapering tiers, it is one of the finest medieval minars in the Deccan, its brick surface once decorated with coloured tiles and Persian-influenced ornament. It is thought to have been raised to celebrate the capture of the fort or as a call to prayer for a nearby mosque, and it is a striking feature of one of India's most formidable fortifications.
