The Martinitoren is the tall medieval bell tower of the Martinikerk in the northern Dutch city of Groningen, rising about 97 metres and long the tallest structure in the region. Built in stages from the fifteenth century and topped with an elaborate spire, it is affectionately known to locals as d'Olle Grieze. The tower holds a large carillon whose bells ring out over the market square below. Visitors climb hundreds of steps to viewing galleries that look across the city and the flat surrounding countryside.
