The Heinrich-Hertz-Turm is Hamburg's telecommunications tower, completed in 1968 and rising about 279 metres, the tallest structure in the city. Named after the physicist who first demonstrated radio waves, its concrete shaft flares into a pod that once held a public observation deck and a revolving restaurant, both closed since the 1990s. The tower is a defining element of the Hamburg skyline, and long-running plans have aimed to restore public access. Locals sometimes call it the Telemichel after the nearby St Michael's Church.
