Hamburg City Hall is the seat of the city-state's parliament and senate, a grand symbol of the Hanseatic city's wealth and self-governance. Completed in 1897 in a lavish Neo-Renaissance style, it contains more than six hundred rooms. Its ornate sandstone facade, crowned by a tall clock tower, faces a formal square, while a colonnaded inner courtyard holds a fountain dedicated to the goddess of health commemorating a cholera epidemic. Guided tours reveal opulent ceremonial halls decorated with paintings of the city's history.
