The Chilehaus is a landmark office building in Hamburg's Kontorhaus district and a masterwork of 1920s Brick Expressionism. Designed by architect Fritz Höger and completed in 1924, it was commissioned by a merchant who had made his fortune trading with Chile. Its most celebrated feature is the sharp eastern corner, which narrows to a point resembling the prow of a ship cutting through the streets. Clad in dark clinker brick with rippling facades and pointed arches, the building forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage quarter.
