The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe is Hamburg's museum of applied art and design, founded in 1874 to raise the standard of craft and industry. Its wide-ranging collections span ancient art, medieval treasures, East Asian ceramics, Art Nouveau interiors, historic keyboard instruments, and modern graphic and industrial design. A restored Jugendstil salon and reconstructed period rooms illustrate the decorative arts across the centuries. Housed near the main station, it offers a broad survey of European and world craftsmanship.
