The Reeperbahn is Hamburg's famous entertainment and nightlife street in the St. Pauli district, historically the city's red-light and sailors' quarter. Its name recalls the ropewalks where rope for sailing ships was once made along its length. Since the twentieth century the avenue has been lined with theatres, music clubs, bars, and variety shows, and it gained musical fame as the place where the Beatles honed their act in the early 1960s. Neon signs, cabarets, and side streets give the district a raucous energy.
