The Colonius is Cologne's telecommunications tower, completed in 1981 and standing about 266 metres, the tallest structure in the city. Its slim concrete shaft flares near the top into a pod that once housed a public viewing platform and a revolving restaurant, both closed to visitors since the 1990s. The tower remains a prominent landmark visible across the Rhineland and features in the skyline alongside the twin spires of Cologne Cathedral. Campaigns to reopen its observation deck have recurred over the years.
