Six centuries in the making, Cologne Cathedral was begun in 1248 and finished only in 1880, yet its later builders held so faithfully to the medieval plans that the whole reads as one soaring Gothic vision. Its twin spires long stood among the tallest structures on Earth, and the church remains a towering emblem of European Christianity. UNESCO inscribed Cologne Cathedral as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
