The Parque Farroupilha, widely known as the Redenção, is the most popular park in Porto Alegre, capital of Brazil's southernmost state. Laid out on former common land, it combines lakes, wooded groves and open lawns near the city centre. The park holds a monument to the region's colonists, an amusement area, a botanical section and an amphitheatre. On Sundays a large craft and antiques fair spreads along one avenue, and gaúcho traditions of maté drinking and music animate its shaded walks.
