Fairmount Park is one of the largest municipal park systems in the United States, spread along both banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Established to protect the city's water supply in the nineteenth century, it grew to encompass thousands of acres of woodland, meadow and historic colonial mansions. The 1876 Centennial Exhibition was held here, leaving behind Memorial Hall and a Japanese house and garden. Boathouse Row, a Victorian rowing club terrace lit at night, marks its riverside edge.
