The Bois de la Cambre is a landscaped park at the southern end of Brussels, laid out in the 1860s as an extension of the vast Sonian Forest into the city. Designed in the English style, it winds through woodland to a central lake with an island reached by a small chain ferry. A café-restaurant on the island and open lawns draw families and joggers. The park's curving carriage drives, ponds and mature beeches make it a favoured green retreat for residents of the surrounding districts.
