The Amsterdamse Bos is a large woodland park on the southern edge of Amsterdam, laid out in the 1930s as a public works project during the Depression. Roughly three times the size of New York's Central Park, it was planted entirely by hand on reclaimed land below sea level. A long rowing course, boating lakes, a goat farm and open-air theatre lie within its woods and meadows. Cycling and walking trails cross the forest, and herds of Highland cattle graze part of the grounds.
