A historic square in the old city of Istanbul, this plaza occupies the site of the ancient Forum of Theodosius and today fronts the main gate of Istanbul University and the Beyazıt Mosque. Fragments of Roman columns are scattered near the mosque, hinting at the grand imperial forum that once stood here. The square adjoins the entrance to the Grand Bazaar, and its edges bustle with book sellers, students and pigeons. As a crossroads of Byzantine, Ottoman and modern history, it remains one of the busiest spaces of the historic peninsula.
