Náměstí Svobody, Freedom Square, is the central square of Brno, a wedge-shaped space that has been the city's main marketplace since the 13th century. Burgher houses in Gothic, Renaissance and later styles surround it, including the ornate House of the Four Mamlases with its straining stone figures. A plague column and a modern black stone clock that releases a glass marble each day at eleven stand among the paving. Trams cross the square, and cafés and Christmas markets keep it lively through the year.
