The Vrijthof is the largest and most famous square in Maastricht, bordered by the Romanesque Basilica of Saint Servatius, the Gothic church of St John with its red tower, and rows of café terraces. Once the burial ground and pilgrimage focus around the tomb of Saint Servatius, it developed into the city's grand social space. The square hosts open-air concerts, carnival celebrations and a Christmas market, and gives its name to the annual outdoor performances of the tenor André Rieu held here each summer.
