Guryongsa is a Buddhist temple on the slopes of Chiaksan, southeast of Seoul, whose founding tradition reaches back over a thousand years to the Silla period. Its name, meaning Nine Dragons Temple, refers to a legend of nine dragons said to have lived in a pond on the site before the temple was built. Reached through a valley of dense forest and clear streams, its weathered wooden halls and old paintings sit amid mountain scenery favoured by hikers.
