The Zahir Mosque in Alor Setar is the state mosque of Kedah and one of the oldest and most admired mosques in Malaysia, completed in 1912. Its design, inspired by mosques in Sumatra, is marked by a cluster of large black domes rising over a symmetrical prayer hall set in landscaped grounds. It stands near the royal ceremonial square in the heart of the town and hosts state religious events and Quran recitation competitions. Frequently cited among the country's most beautiful mosques, it defines northern Kedah.
