The Menara Kudus Mosque in central Java is celebrated for its extraordinary minaret, built in the form of a red-brick Hindu-Javanese temple tower rather than a conventional Islamic minaret. Founded in the sixteenth century and associated with Sunan Kudus, one of the nine saints credited with spreading Islam in Java, it embodies the peaceful blending of older Hindu-Buddhist traditions with the new faith. Split gateways and carved brickwork reinforce the syncretic character, making it a revered pilgrimage site.
