The Quba Mosque on the southern edge of Medina is regarded as the first mosque of Islam, its foundations traditionally laid by the Prophet Muhammad on his migration from Mecca in 622. The present structure, greatly enlarged and rebuilt over the centuries, features gleaming white domes, slender minarets and shaded courtyards paved in marble. A well-known tradition holds that praying here carries special reward, drawing steady streams of pilgrims from the nearby Prophet's Mosque. Palm groves still surround parts of the site.
