The King Saud Mosque is the largest mosque in Jeddah, designed by the Egyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil and completed in 1987. It is admired as a modern reinterpretation of classical Islamic architecture, using domes of varying sizes, arcaded courtyards and a tall minaret rendered in warm stone and plaster. The main dome spans a broad prayer hall that holds thousands of worshippers, with more space in the surrounding porticoes. The mosque earned recognition for reviving traditional forms in a contemporary setting.
