The Imam Khomeini Mosque, historically the Shah Mosque or Masjed-e Soltani, adjoins the sprawling Grand Bazaar of Tehran and serves as one of the city's principal congregational mosques. Founded in the early nineteenth century under the Qajar ruler Fath-Ali Shah, it features a large courtyard, arcaded prayer halls and tiled portals in Qajar style. It has repeatedly been a stage for major political sermons in modern Iranian history. Merchants from the neighbouring bazaar fill its shaded halls at prayer times.
