The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in the Recoleta district is one of the oldest churches in Buenos Aires, completed in 1732 by Franciscan friars in a restrained colonial Baroque style. Its white facade with a single tower and blue-tiled dome stands beside the famous Recoleta cemetery. The interior preserves silver altarpieces and religious art brought from Spain and the Andean colonies, and a small cloister museum displays sacred objects. A national historic monument, it anchors a leafy plaza that draws crowds to its weekend craft market.
