Located at the edge of the colonial zone in Santo Domingo, this marble mausoleum honors the three founding fathers of the Dominican Republic: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Ramón Matías Mella. Inaugurated in 1976 by the old city gate, the white monument shelters their remains beneath sculpted allegorical figures and an eternal flame. Its clean modern lines contrast with the surrounding colonial architecture. As the resting place of the men who led the country to independence in 1844, it is a site of national ceremonies.
