The central square of the colonial city, laid out beside the first cathedral of the Americas and named for the bronze statue of Christopher Columbus that stands at its centre. Shaded by trees and surrounded by cafes and historic buildings, it is a gathering place for residents, street performers and vendors. The cathedral's coral-limestone facade forms its southern edge. As the social hub of the old quarter, the park is a natural starting point for exploring the grid of Renaissance-era streets that spread outward from it.
