This grand monument anchors Heroes' Square at the end of Andrássy Avenue in Budapest, built to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Magyar arrival in the Carpathian Basin. Begun in 1896 and completed decades later, it centres on a tall column crowned by the archangel Gabriel holding the Hungarian crown. At the base ride the seven chieftains who led the founding tribes, while flanking colonnades hold statues of kings and national heroes above a vast ceremonial square.
