The Esie Museum in Kwara State was the first museum established in Nigeria, opened in 1945 to house an extraordinary collection of soapstone figures. More than a thousand carved images of seated men and women, of uncertain age and origin, were found near the town and are linked to local legend. The stylised carvings, some depicting figures holding weapons or instruments, remain an archaeological puzzle. Displays present the sculptures alongside interpretation of the traditions surrounding them.
