The Lamu Museum occupies a grand former colonial official's house on the seafront of Lamu, an ancient Swahili town on the Kenyan coast. Its galleries present the culture of the archipelago, from carved doors, furniture and jewellery to dhow-building, navigation and the ceremonial siwa horns prized as regional treasures. Exhibits interpret the Swahili civilisation, its Indian Ocean trade links and its distinctive architecture of coral-stone houses. The waterfront setting places the museum at the heart of the historic town.
