This colonial-era museum in Peshawar holds one of the world's finest collections of Gandharan art, the Greco-Buddhist sculpture produced along the ancient trade routes of the northwest. Its galleries are filled with standing Buddhas, narrative relief panels and stucco heads that blend classical drapery with Indian iconography. The Victorian hall, originally built as a memorial, also displays Islamic and ethnographic material. The concentration of Gandharan masterpieces makes it essential for understanding early Buddhist art.
