MOA Museum of Art

Perched high on a hillside above the hot-spring resort of Atami, this museum is reached through a series of long escalators tunnelled into the slope. Its collection of Japanese and East Asian art includes a celebrated painted screen of red and white plum blossoms by Ogata Korin, shown seasonally. Galleries redesigned by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto give the works a serene, minimalist setting. Sweeping views over Sagami Bay and a golden reconstructed tea room add to the dramatic experience.
