Henderson Field on Guadalcanal was the strategic airfield at the centre of the fierce 1942–43 fighting for the island, and it remains the site of Honiara's international airport. Originally begun by Japanese forces and seized and completed by the Allies, control of the field decided the outcome of the Guadalcanal campaign. Named after a pilot killed at Midway, it carries deep military significance for the Pacific war. Travellers arriving in Solomon Islands land where one of the pivotal contests of the conflict was fought.
