This Anglican cathedral crowns a hill at the head of Nelson's main street, its tower and steps forming the focal point of the city centre. Constructed in stages through the twentieth century in a simplified Gothic style using local marble, it replaced earlier wooden churches on the same commanding site. A flight of steps rises from the town's central avenue to the cathedral steps, a popular gathering spot. The building anchors the compact heritage core of the sunny northern city.
