Vines terrace the slopes of the Wachau, the reach of the Danube between Melk and Krems where river, rock and agriculture compose one of Austria's loveliest landscapes. Its depth of history runs from the Venus of Willendorf, carved here some 30,000 years ago, to the great Baroque abbey of Melk and the castle ruin above Dürnstein where legend places Richard the Lionheart's captivity. UNESCO inscribed the Wachau Cultural Landscape in 2000.
