This monumental war memorial rises above the Kings Domain gardens on St Kilda Road, south of central Melbourne. Completed in 1934 to honour Victorians who served in the First World War, its classical form draws on ancient Greek architecture and culminates in a stepped pyramid roof. Inside, a shaft of sunlight famously falls across the Stone of Remembrance at the eleventh hour of Remembrance Day each year. Later galleries and a visitor centre beneath the structure trace Australia's wartime history.
