This elegant colonial villa overlooks Elizabeth Bay just east of central Sydney and was built in the 1830s for the colonial secretary Alexander Macleay. Celebrated for its oval saloon and cantilevered staircase rising beneath a domed skylight, it is often described as one of the finest Greek Revival houses in the country. The mansion has been restored and furnished to evoke its early grandeur, and the grounds retain fragments of what were once extensive botanical gardens.
