This large cultural complex in western São Paulo was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1989 to celebrate the shared heritage of Latin America. Its white concrete pavilions, ramps and a vast open plaza are punctuated by a striking sculpture of a hand with the map of the continent traced in red across the palm. The buildings host exhibitions of folk art, a library, an auditorium and events promoting regional integration. The sweeping modernist forms and monumental scale make it a notable example of the architect's late civic work.
