This square gives its name to the Liberdade district, historically the centre of São Paulo's large Japanese community and now a broader East Asian neighbourhood. Red torii-style arches with hanging lanterns line the streets, and a weekend market fills the plaza with stalls selling food, crafts and produce. Nearby stand a Japanese immigration museum and Buddhist temples reflecting the area's heritage. As a major such enclave outside Japan, the square is a distinctive cultural pocket in the city centre.
