This art-deco skyscraper, long known as the Altino Arantes Building or Banespão, rose in the centre of São Paulo in the 1940s and was modelled loosely on New York's Empire State Building. For years it was the city's tallest structure, and its open observation terrace near the top offers a sweeping panorama of the endless urban sea of towers. Restored as a cultural centre, it now hosts exhibitions, shops and viewing decks. The lantern-like crown that gives the building its lighthouse nickname remains a fixture of the downtown skyline.

Where next?

The world is wide open.
