This baroque church near the main square of Ouro Preto was built in the late eighteenth century by a lay brotherhood, with both the sculptor Aleijadinho and his father contributing to its design and carving. Its finely worked stone facade, twin towers and gilded interior exemplify the mature Minas baroque style. Soapstone details around the doorway and altars show the craftsmanship of the mining-town workshops. It forms part of the ensemble that earned Ouro Preto its UNESCO listing.
