This circular indoor arena sits beside the famous Maracanã football stadium and was built in the mid-1950s for volleyball, basketball and other indoor sports. Its name means the little Maracanã, reflecting its role as a companion to the giant open-air ground next door. Over the decades it has hosted world championships, concerts and Olympic volleyball, becoming a shrine for Brazilian volleyball fans. The domed concrete structure with a ring of windows remains a busy venue in the city's main sports complex near the historic Quinta district.
