Housed in the former colonial courthouse of 1750 in central St. John's, this museum traces the history of the twin-island nation from its Amerindian inhabitants through the sugar plantation era to independence. Exhibits include pre-Columbian tools, plantation-era artefacts, and a bat used by the cricketer Viv Richards, a national hero. The Georgian courthouse building, damaged by earthquakes and repaired over the centuries, is itself among the oldest surviving structures in the capital. The collection gives a compact overview of local heritage.
