The colonial civic heart of the Bahamian capital, a group of pink Georgian-style government buildings from the early nineteenth century arranged around a central square. A statue of Queen Victoria presides at its centre, flanked by the House of Assembly, the former colonial secretary's office and the Senate. The symmetrical pastel facades with white trim are among the most photographed sights on the island. The square continues to house the parliament and remains the ceremonial focus of national political life in downtown Nassau.
