This lighthouse marks the harbour entrance at the tip of the Fort George peninsula in Belize City. It stands beside the tomb of Baron Bliss, an eccentric British benefactor who, though he never set foot ashore, left a fortune to the colony after fishing in its waters. His bequest funds public works and a national holiday still celebrated each March. The lighthouse and memorial, set on a breezy seafront point, are a familiar landmark of the old capital.
