The national museum of Belize occupies a former colonial prison in Belize City, built in 1857 and used to hold prisoners until the 1990s. One restored cell is preserved to show conditions of the era. Galleries display Maya artefacts including jade and pottery, colonial-period objects, historic postage stamps and exhibits on the country's diverse cultures. The brick building itself, near the Central Bank, is among the oldest surviving structures in the former capital.
