The main square of Casco Viejo, this plaza is where Panama's separation from Colombia was proclaimed in 1903. Ringed by the cathedral, the canal museum and colonial townhouses, it forms the ceremonial heart of the historic quarter. A monument at its centre commemorates independence, and shaded benches invite visitors to rest amid the restored architecture. The square is the natural focus for exploring the UNESCO-listed old city with its balconied streets and sea views.
